GNU Linux and its plans for the Power PC platform
There was a time when the Power PC processors were highly respected in the market, including Apple used this type of processors to power their equipment. Things have changed considerably in recent years, and unfortunately for the Power PC platform, the news is not very good at all. Some Linux distributions are GNU leaving support for Power PC based computers, not making much noise about it. One would expect to come across some kind of statement about it, but the fact is that developers seem to have little regard for people who still have a computer with Power PC, as Macs (those that reached the G5 model)
For example, openSUSE has dropped support for this platform for over three months and Fedora, leave aside to computers with Power PC processor in the next version of the operating system (Fedora 13). By contacting the maintenance team openSUSE about these decisions was told that only respond to the dictates of the market since according to their records, less than 1% of users using Power PC processors.
Ubuntu made things a little different because they actually official announcement that from version 7.04, support for Power PC went no further. For those who have computers of this type, published a special FAQ useful information. Could it be that this platform will be out of plans of all distributions of Linux?.
